Nestled in the heart of downtown New Orleans, just around the corner from the bustling Canal Street and mere steps from the French Quarter, lies an art gallery unlike any other: the Stella Jones Gallery. This venue is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing Black art all year-round, providing a platform for extraordinary talents, including the works of artists such as Lavett Ballard, Ron Bechet, and Kevin Cole.

During my visit to the gallery last month, I had the privilege of meeting Stella Jones herself. She shared her inspiring journey, transitioning from a career in medicine to the pursuit of her passion for art. Dr. Jones recounted her family's story—an inspiring narrative of love, dedication, resilience, courage, and determination. With the unwavering support of her husband, who tended to their children while she completed her education and training in another city, Stella navigated the challenges of uprooting her family in pursuit of her career aspirations. A pioneer in her field, she was supported in her medical endeavors by influential community leaders, including the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Reflecting on her experiences as a Black medical professional, Dr. Jones recounted her time in the hospital, where she safely delivered thousands of babies, ensuring the well-being of both mothers and children without losing a single life. Despite her extensive experience, she faced the unfortunate reality of being overlooked and undervalued due to the color of her skin. It was only after relocating to New Orleans that she discovered her medical expertise was not in demand. However, this setback paved the way for new opportunities in a city rich with art and culture. For over twenty-seven years, Dr. Jones's gallery has stood as a mecca of fine Black art, showcasing our past, present, and future.

With her gifted hands, Dr. Jones has not only brought countless lives into this world but has also nurtured the creative expressions of many artists whose works have inspired and moved audiences. She openly shared her story while encouraging us to pursue our own dreams, emphasizing that we were not merely "trying" but actively "doing." Many of us often undervalue our efforts in chasing our aspirations, yet it is crucial to recognize that every step we take constitutes a significant action toward our goals. A proud mother, Dr. Jones spoke of her daughter, Shaunna J. Edwards, and her novel, The Thread Collectors, which I eagerly anticipate reading.

At over eighty years old, Stella remains vibrant and full of life, serving as a reservoir of wisdom. I wholeheartedly embrace my own lack of knowledge, hoping to one day accumulate a wealth of experiences enriched by the lessons, conversations, and adventures that come from venturing beyond the confines of ignorance and seeking understanding.

Stella Jones embodies Black excellence through her life, her family, and the artists she represents. In a landscape where representation of people of color is scarce, galleries like hers are invaluable treasures for aspiring Black art collectors like myself, who seek to navigate the art world in search of pieces that bring joy and serve as future investments.

The next time you’re in downtown NOLA, stop by Stella Jones Gallery and be sure to mention to either Stella or her exceptional assistant, Beryl Johns, that Prescella sent you.
